Plot: 1787. HMS Bounty, commanded by William Bligh, sets sail from Portsmouth. She is heading for Tahiti, on a mission to introduce breadfruit plants to Jamaica. It is Bligh's first command and it is soon apparent that he is happy to hand out severe punishments for the most minor infraction. The welfare of his men is also not of primary concern to him. All this not only puts him in conflict with the seamen but with his First Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian.
Alternative Plot: On a sea voyage to transport breadfruit to Jamaica, English Captain Bligh (Trevor Howard) abuses his crew and officers enough to anger his 1st Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian (Marlon Brando). When they reach their destination, tensions ease and the crew luxuriates in island life until Bligh claps several men in irons for trying to desert. On the trip home, further indignities inspire Christian to stage a mutiny and set Bligh and those loyal to him afloat in a row boat.
