Plot: Upon learning that she and her lawyer husband Dennis Coulson are expecting their first child, thirty-four year old school teacher Lauren Coulson wants to know what pregnancy is like by asking her widowed mother. It is then that a shocked Lauren learns for the first time that her mother was never pregnant, and that she was adopted. With the help of a private investigator, Lauren and Dennis are easily able to discover the identity of her birth mother, a woman by the name of Evelyn Wells, who lives in a nearby town. Upon further reading, they also learn that Evelyn was involved in a criminal case around the time she would have been pregnant: Evelyn was severely beaten and her father shot to death by who was then her boyfriend, Garrett Fowler, who has been serving a life sentence since. The implication is that Garrett is her birth father, which they will learn is indeed the case. Upon meeting Evelyn, Lauren and Dennis see that she is a heavily medicated woman, the medication seemingly to combat her extreme stress. As such, her brother, Jonas Wells, does whatever needed to protect her from any added stress. Lauren is also able to visit with Garrett in prison, he who vows that he did not either beat Evelyn or kill her father. Following these meetings, Lauren has a feeling that Garrett might be telling the truth, and so she starts to investigate on her own, with Dennis' assistance back at the DA's office. They will learn that they cannot trust anyone involved, and the closer they get to the truth, the greater their lives are in danger.
Alternative Plot: After a woman (Nicole de Boer) locates her birth mother (Barbara Niven), she investigates the older woman's mysterious past.
