Plot: The teenager Quinn Brenner visits the medium Elise Rainier expecting to contact her mother Lillith. Quinn explains that she tried to contact her mother alone, but Elise refuses to help her. Soon Quinn is haunted by the fiend of The Man Who Can't Breathe in her room but her skeptical father Sean Brenner does not believe in her words. However, when Quinn is violently attacked by the evil spirit, Sean asks Elise to help his daughter. Elise tries, but she is attacked by the Bride In Black that wants to kill her and she refuses to continue. The desperate Sean is convinced by his son Alex to contacts the charlatans Tucker and Specs that have a blog relating their supernatural experiences while Elise meets her friend Carl that convinces her to help Quinn. Can the teenager be saved from the possession of the evil spirit?
Alternative Plot: When teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) senses that her late mother is trying to contact her, she seeks help from gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). However, Elise's tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities. After Quinn is attacked by a malevolent entity, her father (Dermot Mulroney) pleads with Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into The Further -- where she finds a powerful demon with an insatiable craving for human souls.
