Swashbuckler (1971)

Les mariés de l'an deux

Plot: Bidding a hurried farewell to his beloved France after the untimely death of an aristocrat, the humble commoner, Nicolas Philibert, flees to South Carolina and makes a fortune as a crop merchant, in late-eighteenth-century America. Successful and rich, Nicolas yearns to settle down by marrying an affluent heiress; however, when someone accuses him of bigamy, the wedding is called off until the groom returns with an official divorce certificate. Having no other option but to comply with this urgent request, Nicolas lands at Nantes shortly after the outbreak of the French Revolution, only to discover that his legal wife, Charlotte, is trying to woo a rebellious Marquis. Will Nicolas ever get the precious paper?

Alternative Plot: In 1787, Nicolas Phillibert wants to marry a rich American heiress, but he is still wed to Charlotte in France. He returns there to divorce Charlotte, but when he sees other men romancing her, his interest rekindles.
