Best-Selling Murder (2016)

5.2

Plot: New York-based novelist Hannah Ryan is having a bad year. She is supporting her mother both emotionally and financially as her mother battles a debilitating and life threatening case of cancer. Who was her husband, Jason Ryan, left her for Julia Harper, not only a mutual acquaintance but also a fellow writer, Julia who used to use her as a sounding board in wanting advice on her own stalled writing career. While Hannah succumbs to Jason's advances in still maintaining a sexual relationship with him, she learns that Julia is pregnant with his child. Since the divorce, Hannah has been pursued by a number of men, who do not seem to be able to pick up on the subtle hints that she is not interested in them. And although her novels have received awards and she has a loyal following, Hannah is dropped by her longtime publishing company for not reaping the company the financial rewards in return. In the process, they request the advance they already forwarded to her for her next book, money which she's already spent, leaving her in financial straits with her mom's medical bills and the alimony she pays Jason, the latter who does not take too kindly to any delay in receiving the full monthly amount. The latest item is just too much for Hannah to handle, and what was a case of writer's block turns into therapy in writing a vigilante murder short story of one of the people who wronged her, the protagonist murderer named Bloody Mary after the libation in which she's been imbibing of late and fashioned on what she is feeling herself against the said person. Loving the story, Hannah's friend Darby Ross convinces her to partner with her in turning the story into a serialized anthology available solely through online subscriptions, Darby effectively taking over the tasks of her former publisher. Shortly following this first story being made available online, a real life murder mirroring Hannah's story takes place, the victim that said person who inspired the story. This murder brings onto the scene the NYPD, the investigation led by Detective Austin McEwen. As there could be a tie between the story and the murder, Hannah is pulled in many different directions, from wanting this business venture to be a success which would be bolstered by the publicity of indeed tying the murder to the story, versus the need to get out her emotions in writing more murder stories while not wanting any more real life murders if there is indeed someone using this writing venture as a murder blueprint. As an attraction develops between Hannah and Austin, he has to tread lightly in finding out if Hannah and/or Darby are indeed hiding the fact of being a murderer. As the real life versions of Hannah's story victims and Hannah herself become potential targets of the murderer, Hannah may discover how deep her feelings truly do go for the people who inspired the stories.

Alternative Plot: A celebrated novelist creates a new pulp crime serial after she's dropped from her publisher. When a real-life murder mimics her most recently released chapter, everyone wonders if it's merely a coincidence.
