Plot: Col. Ryan of the US army's shot down in Italy and taken to a prison camp. He's to lead prisoners on an escape. But not all the soldiers are begins him at first, due to mistakes, he's made. It's up to Ryan to win the support of the mainly British soldiers who's lives he's trying to help saver.
Alternative Plot: World War II story about Allied prisoners who stage a mass breakout from an Italian POW camp, commandeer a train and head towards the Swiss border. As the Italian war effort collapses, the escapees are aided by their captors, but when the Germans catch on, they set out to halt the escape with an armored train and aerial attack.
