Plot: County Waterford, Ireland, 1981. With her exhausted mother of five expecting yet another baby, neglected nine-year-old Cáit leaves her impoverished home to live with her childless distant relatives, Eibhlín and her husband Seán, for the summer. And as the warm and caring foster parents take the withdrawn child in to lighten the load of the family, a minor miracle happens: as the mild Irish summer progresses, Cáit starts to blossom under their care after experiencing affection for the first time. After all, we all seek kindness and love to thrive in this cruel world. But what does the future have in store for the quiet girl??
Alternative Plot: Rural Ireland. 1981. Nine-year-old Cait is sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with foster parents for the summer. Quietly struggling at school and at home, she has learned to hide in plain sight from those around her. She blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one painful truth.
