The Big Trees (1952)

Plot: Having set his sights on making a profit from exploiting northern California's ancient sequoia trees, the unscrupulous lumber baron and silver-tongued entrepreneur, Jim Fallon, sets out to harvest the towering Redwoods of a peaceful Quaker community. However, an unforeseen romantic complication in the shape of the idealistic resident, Alicia Chadwick, the feisty daughter of the group's spiritual leader, Elder Bixby, will set the stage for bitter rivalry and dangerous confrontation between Fallon and grasping timber harvesters. Can Jim, the rough outsider, renounce his former self for the sake of the majestic sequoias?

Alternative Plot: Corrupt Wisconsin lumberman Jim Fallon (Kirk Douglas) travels to Northern California at the dawn of the 20th century in order to gain control of a tract of redwood forest. Fallon's underhanded tactics stir resentment from everyone, including settler Elder Bixby (Charles Meredith) ; his beautiful daughter, Alicia (Eve Miller) ; Fallon's fair-minded employee, Yukon Burns (Edgar Buchanan) ; and his right-hand man, Frenchy LeCroix (John Archer) -- and his cheating ways create unlikely bedfellows.
